Discovering Wensleydale, a traditional English cheese

When thinking about English cheese Stilton PDO and West Country Farmhouse Cheddar PDO come immediately to my mind, however, the English cheese scene is infinitely richer than most, particularly in Europe’s traditional cheese-making countries, think. Wensleydale cheese has been a very pleasant discovery, I tasted it recently for the first time and have been a repeat buyer since then. There’s something special in it: soft but not bland, with its own personality but without an aftertaste, crumbly but firm…go try it out!

I notice the Wensleydale cheese you’ve featured here is made in Cheshire. Does this matter? One of my favourite Cheshire cheeses (Appleby’s) is made in Shropshire.

Good observation Bill! the Wensleydale cheese sold under Tesco brand is indeed made in Cheshire and there might be other Wensleydale cheeses made somewhere else. But this is not the case of cheese sold under the Protected Designation of Origin “Yorkshire Wensleydale PDO“, that must be produced with milk that comes exclusively from the Wensleydale area in Yorkshire. As far as I know there is only one cheesemaker producing the protected Yorkshire Wensleydale, the Wensleydale Creamery, this link might be of interest to you http://www.wensleydale.co.uk/about/pdo/protected-designation-information/
